Background

The NHS faces big challenges. Staff are working hard, but many people still find it difficult to get the right care when they need it.

On 12 September, Lord Darzi published an independent review of the NHS. It aimed to start an open conversation about the state of our health and service and the change we need. The review showed the scale of the challenge. People find it hard to get appointments, can have long waits and we need to focus more on preventing people from getting ill.

That is why the NHS England together with Department of Health and Social Care has launched Change NHS: help build a health service fit for the future. This is a national conversation to listen to your views and ideas to inform the development of the national 10-Year Health Plan.

We know change is needed. But we also know that many of the solutions we need are already here, working somewhere in the NHS today. We in NHS South East London are already working hard and are supporting the NHS to tackle these challenges. Read more about our work on our South East London Integrated Care System website

We also know there is much more to do, which is why we are playing our part in the launch the consultation for the 10-Year Health Plan alongside the government, and we want to hear from you — patients, their families and the wider public — about your NHS story.

How we involved local people?

We hosted webinars on Monday 20 January, 12 – 2pm and Wednesday 5 February, 6 – 8pm to hear your views and suggestions for three ‘shift’ areas:

  • Moving more care from hospitals to communities
  • Making better use of technology
  • Preventing sickness, not just treating it

Thank you to everyone attending. We hope you found the webinar informative and you had opportunity to feedback your views and tell us what you think. You can read a summary report including insights and feedback from both session here. The feedback was also submitted to the national team.

If you missed our session you can still feedback you can still also give your views on national portal via the links below. This will be open at least until 14 April 2025.

We also worked with South London Listens and Citizens UK to engage with over 35 community leaders in south east London at a face to face round table discussion on 22 January 2025. The findings from these discussions were fed back to the national team and you can read a report of these here. The feedback and ideas were collected from public, staff and organisation.
