An update from the Personalised Care patient content design group

The Personalised Care team at South East London Integrated Care System (SEL ICS) worked with a group of local people to develop a set of information and content about personalised care for the Integrated Care System website. The group met five times and worked in between meetings to develop the new page on the website which you can see here Me, my health, my choice - South East London ICS.

Personalised care is about people having more choice and control over the support that people receive for their health and wellbeing based on 'what matters to them'. Below is an opportunity to access 3 chat forums by telling us what personalised care means to you, why you think it is important and how should we share information about it. We welcome your thoughts.

At the first meeting, the group talked about what makes a good website. Discussions focused on information being easy to read, concise with links to other sites for more information and user-friendly webpages. Members used the opportunity to share examples of good practice from other websites. The ideas and feedback received will be used to decide how we share information about personalised care on the SEL ICS website.

At the second meeting, the group talked about what personalised care means to them and why it is important. The NHS outlines six ways to offer support to someone based around what matters to them. This is called the ‘comprehensive model of personalised care’. There is more information here (1) Comprehensive Model of Personalised Care (short version) - YouTube. The group discussed the model and considered how to describe the different areas on the website.

At the third meeting, the group discussed Personal Health Budgets (PHBs). A PHB is an amount of money to support a person’s health and wellbeing needs, which is planned and agreed between them (or their representative), and their local NHS team. The group started planning the content for the webpage about personalised care. This discussion continued in meeting four, where the group talked about the writing style, labels and titles and ways to describe ‘good’ personalised care.

In-between meetings, content for the webpages was written and reviewed by members of the group and the personalised care team.

At the final meeting, the group reviewed the final draft content. The group felt that changes should be made to the presentation of the information, to make it more engaging e.g. the use of colour, pictures and videos. The group had recommendations for future work for the webpage. Recommendations included:

  • An easy-read version of the information
  • A local animation explaining personalised care
  • Collecting and sharing case stories.
